Color Me Mine of Alameda just won a Totally Awesome Award for Easiest Drop-Off Play Spots in San Francisco. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Easiest Drop-Off Play Spots” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Color Me Mine: Color Me Mine offers the opportunity for families to spend quality time together where everyone can take part in the fun. We have ceramics that appeal to people of all ages. From Piggy Banks, to Beer Steins, to Holiday Ornaments, we carry over 600 different items at all times so that everyone can find something perfect to paint.

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
CMM: You don’t need an appointment to come and paint. You come in when you want! Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the process. You also don’t need experience. We’re happy to show you how to do any technique, or to leave you alone if you just want to experiment.

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
CMM: In 2005, I was looking for something to do on a rainy Mother’s Day. It obviously had to be something indoors. We decided to paint ceramics, having only done this when I was a kid. We ended up having so much fun, and not wanting to leave. I decided then, that we need to have a paint-your-own-ceramic place in beautiful Alameda. And the following year, we were up and running.

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
CMM: Coffee. 1 cup.

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
CMM: My biggest pet peeve, no question, is when a customer comes in, spends a few hours being creative, produces a beautiful work of art – and then never comes in to pick it up. The process to glaze and fire the piece takes just under a week. We tell the customers that they can pick it up the following week but sometimes, we never see them again. We “officially” will hold their items for up to 90 days. I’ll be honest though. I’ve been known to hold things for a year. Unfortunately, we really don’t have that much storage room.
