If you know anything about Cirque du Soleil, it’s that the shows are a feast for the eyes with acrobatics, powerful music and constant motion. With CRYSTAL, Cirque’s 42nd production, you get all of that plus the added element of it being performed on the ice for a whole new level of performance. The show is coming to San Jose’s SAP Center at the end of this month—read on to see what you can expect when you buy your tickets!

Imagination on Ice
CRYSTAL takes you on a journey that follows the main character, Crystal, as she seeks to fulfill her destiny through exploring the depths of her imagination. Crystal is a misfit and a dreamer who ventures out on to a frozen lake, only to fall through into the underwater world of her imagination. She sees a reflection of herself and that alter ego guides her to take a fresh look at life.

Performance at a New Level
The 40 performers in CRYSTAL includes 22 acrobats and musicians who had to learn how to skate and 18 skaters who had to learn acrobatics. Canadian figure-skating legend Kurt Browning was brought on board to assist with the skating part of the creative process. Disciplines such as swinging trapeze, aerial straps and hand to hand were fused together with skating disciplines such as synchro, freestyle, figure and extreme skating on ramps.

The Ice as a Stage
Projection is used to change the scenes through CRYSTAL. Ice provides a natural canvas through which the audience is transported into different environments without changing the physical space. In addition, the ice adds speed and a much faster change of patterns and directions to keep you at the edge of your seat.

San Jose’s Show
If you’ve attended a San Jose Sharks game at the SAP Center, you will be surprised to see how CRYSTAL completely changes the environment for the show. About 3/4 of the arena seats are used for the performance. With action taking place in all directions, every seat offers good views of the action.

CRYSTAL’s only Bay Area show will be in San Jose from March 28-April 1. Tickets start at $32 each. Most shows start at 7:30 p.m. but there are earlier performances (for those with earlier bedtimes) on Saturday and Sunday.
