Spring is officially in the air and if you’re not fortunate enough to have your very own flower or vegetable garden, head on over to Filoli where you and your little one can check out what’s blooming.
Tucked away in the rolling hills of Woodside 30 miles south of San Francisco, you can find this great little outing filled with lush gardens and expansive fields. This serene setting is perfect for horticulture enthusiasts young and old.
The Filoli estate has been around since 1917 and the quirky name “Filoli” was actually derived from the first two letters from the Bourn family credo, “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”
Today, this modern day garden of Eden is enjoyed by both big and small alike. Whether you take advantage of a tour or venturing out on your own tiny trek, little explorers can make all kinds of discoveries from the history behind the estate to learning about the many different plants on display. Bug loving kiddos can even get up close and personal with the newts that migrate back to Filoli every year. While picnicking is not allowed in the gardens, you can grab a bite to eat in the cafe after a day of frolicking.
For the more serious horticulturists, Filoli offers children’s classes and educational programs on botanical art, birdhouse building, and drawing the plethora of animals and insects found at the gardens.
This local treasure that can be enjoyed from February through October, but it’s at its absolute best in the springtime when everything is in bloom and in full color.
