Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza has hit the East Bay by way of San Francisco with family friendly restaurant Little Star Pizza’s recent opening on Solano Avenue in Albany. This is the third location for Little Star, with the first two locations in San Francisco on Valencia Street and Divisadero Street. The bonafide pizza institution is expanding its empire eastward and has even gained the respect of die-hard New York-style pizza lovers thanks to its unique deep-dish cornmeal crust.
Our favorite is the deep-dish Vegetarian loaded with mushrooms, onions, black olives, red bells, garlic, roasted zucchini, chunky tomato sauce and a sprinkling of cheese. This pizza is so jam-packed with flavor you won’t miss the pepperoni. And because it’s so full of veggies, you can skip the salad and get junior devouring his 5-a-day without a clue! Insiders like to order the Brass Monkey, a special off-the-menu pizza that adds sausage to the classic Little Star offering — spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onions, garlic. If the kids prefer a more traditional thin-crust pizza, Little Star offers that too and does it well to boot.
The Albany outpost is particularly family-friendly. It is the largest venue and there are plans to add outdoor seating to take advantage of the great weather in the East Bay. While Little Star doesn’t take reservations, that shouldn’t pose a problem for families who tend to eat on the earlier side anyways! If you prefer, place a take-out order and wait the 25 minutes it takes to bake a deep dish pizza…definitely worth the wait! The kids will be glad you did.
