Supermarket Dread No More

The New Year’s resolution to eat healthier has become a cliché, but this year we’ve got a solution that will make it easier–grocery delivery!  Instead of schlepping to the store with restless kids and a disorganized list, how about you resolve to spend your precious time planning healthy meals for the family and grocery shopping with a click of the mouse? Here’s a roundup of some of the most convenient options.

Planet Organics is a virtual grocer that delivers throughout the Bay Area for free with just a $32 minimum order.  Founders Larry Bearg and Lorene Reed became committed to eating organic and wanted to make it easier for families to eat healthier with their company. PO’s website features a kid-friendly “aisle” with snacks and ready-made meals for one-stop shopping. (BONUS: PO donates $30,000 a year to Bay Area schools through the eScrip program).

Online grocer, spud! also makes it easy to shop healthfully in 2010.  Their Fresh Harvest Box offers a variety of seasonal organic fruits and vegetables tailored to your family’s preferences—like a personalized CSA box. There is no minimum order for delivery and each zip code has a designated delivery day each week to encourage planning ahead.

Farm Fresh to You offers exactly that, organic produce grown by the Barsotti and Barnes families on their Capay Valley farm, 90 miles northeast of San Francisco, delivered to your home or office.  The family has been growing organic goods for customers since 1976 and is involved in every step of the business – from editing the weekly newsletter delivered with your food, to managing the Farm Fresh to You Store in the San Francisco Ferry building. Sign up for fruit, veggie or a combo box online or at the Ferry Building location.

Did you know that you can shop online at Safeway and get your groceries delivered?  They’ve recently focused on nutritional food for kids, toddlers, and babies with two private label brands that are worth checking out. Eating Right Kids™ packaged food features a color-coded nutritional guide right on the front for easy reading. Grab a pack of Kid’s Grapes with Cheese Bites for a healthy snack on the run or heat up the Kid’s Multigrain Mini Pancakes when cold cereal gets boring.  Safeway’s O Organics™ food follows USDA organic standard practices so you can shop confidently when you see the O label on Infant Formula with Iron for your newborn or Banana Mango Bite Size Freeze Dried Fruit snacks for your toddler.

For Whole Foods junkies, there’s Shophoppers, a personal shopping and delivery service that works exclusively with the healthy chain. The folks at Shophoppers will pick up your requested products at Whole Foods and deliver them to you with same day service if you email your shopping list by 11:00 in the morning.  Perfect for new parents or those stuck at home with the flu.
