Hidden Parks & Gardens of the Peninsula

You spent summer splashing around Stafford Park, picnicked and played at Washington Park, and ventured to the Junior Museum & Zoo at Rinconada Park. Now what? Time to check out the Peninsula’s hidden gems. They may be just around the corner from your house or a few short miles from your family’s favorite hood. Either way, these (formerly) secret spots are worth exploring!

Japanese Tea Garden, San Mateo

Why it’s great: There are too many bonsai, cherry blossoms, ponds and Japanese maples to feel stressed regardless how many kids you’ve agreed to take on this play date. Though set within Central Park, which is far from hidden, locals and visitors often miss one of its greatest attractions. The award-winning Japanese Tea Garden offers a calm respite for kids (and parents) who may need a break from the park’s expansive and often crowded playground.

Where: Central Park, San Mateo (closest to the entrance at 7^th Ave. and Laurel Ave.)

Good to know: Kids can help feed the koi fish in the Japanese Tea Garden's pond at 11 a.m. each day.
