Your family’s weekend routine need a little shaking up? So why not load up the car and head down to Santa Cruz this weekend to catch a concert (the weather forecast looks promising). It’s not a party-hearty jam-band weekend with the college crowd, but a family-friendly show sure to please the pants off your tots.
PBS’s children’s show superstar, “Mr. Steve” (he goes by Steve Roslonek to grown-ups), is making his West Coast debut in Santa Cruz and has a Saturday show lined up at Messiah Lutheran Church at 4:00 pm. There’s a retro feel to his songs that parents find irresistible; his music has been compared to “Schoolhouse Rock” meets “Mr. Rogers.” After the show, the whole family can shack up for the night just steps from the beach at the newly renovated Dream Inn. Joie de Vivre recently took over and revamped the classic seaside motel, amping up the luxe factor and adding a children’s wading pool next to the pool and Jacuzzi. And the hotel’s location, right next to the Boardwalk, makes it the perfect jumping-off point for an evening of cotton candy, the Big Dipper, and, if it’s open, the Skyway.
After sleeping soundly in the Dream Inn’s “cush” beds, the family will be up and at ’em early with tons of energy, ready for a family surf lesson with the Santa Cruz surf school. Refuel with a tasty pastry or a healthy sandwich from the gourmet Buttery Bakery, or hold out until dinner to chow down on fish tacos and marvel at the view at Olitas, out on the Santa Cruz pier. Then pile back into the car and sing (or sleep) the whole way back home.
