If you’ve explored every nook and cranny of the Cal Academy and traveled to Mars and back at the Lawrence Hall of Science, it’s time to hop across the Golden Gate for a North Bay museum adventure. From a family-favorite museum under the Bridge to contemporary art hubs off the beaten path, Marin is full of culture and imaginative play. Museum of the American Indian, Novato

One of Marin’s truly hidden gems, the museum is located on the site of a Miwok Village and houses one of the largest collections of Coast Miwok artifacts, as well Navajo textiles, Plains beadwork, birch bark baskets and Northwest coast masks, and much more. They offer a wide variety of educational programs for kids, including Coyote Camp in the summertime, as well as a six part lecture series for adults, traditional story telling by Native elders, and other annual public events such as the Trade Feast.
