Every neighborhood needs its corner bakery—a go-to, non-chain place for a morning pastry and a cup of coffee. Pinkie’s Bakery aims to fill that sweet spot in Bernal Heights. Taking over the space on Cortland Avenue formerly occupied by Sandbox Bakery, Pinkie’s hopes to duplicate the runaway success of their first location in SOMA and spread the love for their pastries and artisan breads.
A Pastry Chef’s Dream Come True
Pinkie’s Bakery is the creation of pastry chef Cheryl Burr, who started out working in hotels and restaurants and finally decided to strike out on her own. Pinkie’s originally specialized in artisan breads and custom cakes, but has since expanded to include a variety of bakery standards like cupcakes, morning buns, and muffins. We highly recommend trying a loaf of their levain, which is perfectly crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside—it makes for the perfect sandwich bread. After an exhaustive scientific study, we’ve concluded 100% of kids prefer the chocolate bread (yes, there’s chocolate bread). The bread selection is artistically arranged under a fantastically whimsical flamingo mural that brightens up the little space.
Every Day is Donut Day
Pinkie’s garnered attention for their Donut Saturdays—their oversized, fluffy donuts were only available the one day of the week and sold out fast. At the Bernal Heights location, donuts are now available every day, but you might want to get there early just in case. Kids will gravitate to the sprinkle-covered super vanilla, while adults will likely go for maple sugar or chocolate hazelnut.
All American Favorites for Kids and Adults
Besides bread and donuts, there’s a wide range of classic pastries that should appeal to kids and grownups both, from sunshiny lemon bars to snickerdoodles to sea salt brownies. There is also a nice savory selection for those with a less intense sweet tooth, from a hearty ham and cheese croissant to a cheesy herb scone. Pig in a blanket is an upscale version of this cocktail party favorite with a sausage wrapped in a golden, flaky pastry. Pinkie’s also has drip coffee to go with your pastries, and a small selection of unusual drinks like lavender lemonade.
Party Cake Central
Pinkie’s also does fancy cake special orders ranging from 8” three layer to full size sheet cakes, which make a nice option for birthday parties and other celebrations. Note that you do have to order whole cakes on their site and pick up at the SOMA location, but the Bernal Heights location does often have their cakes by the slice; a rich-looking chocolate ganache cake and carrot cake were on offer at our last visit.
There’s no seating in the bakery, so it’s better for grab-and-go than plan a leisurely stay. If you’re passing through Bernal Heights, Pinkie’s is worth a stop for a morning fuel up or for an after-lunch treat. Many of their signature items sell out quickly, so we suggest visiting earlier in the day for the widest selection, and the best chance at snagging one of the coveted donuts.
