October in the Bay Area means bright blue skies and pumpkin pies, and this weekend we’ve got a bevy of events to help you celebrate the season. Whether you head out to the beach to build sandcastles or sit under the big top for a family circus, there will be enough activities to keep your little superheroes happy. Sandcastle Contest at Ocean Beach
Bring your buckets, your scoops, and your camera for Leaps’s 30th Anniversary Sandcastle Contest. Architects, builders, and corporations team up with SF elementary schools to create totally awesome sand sculptures. Kids can participate in the building at the Community Sandcastle area. Food trucks, surf, and sand. This year’s theme is Masterpieces in the Sand, and raises money for Leaps art education programs. Sat. 10:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. San Francisco. Free. All Ages. Passport: A D.I.Y. Art Collecting Event
Your petite Picassos will love this hands-on art collecting event. Check in at noon and get your “passport” and then head from venue to venue along the Divisadero corridor to collect individual custom stamps for the passport from local artists. You’ll create a one-of-a-kind art book and meet artists, vendors, and shopkeeps from the SF Bay Area. It’s like a combo of treasure hunting and trick-or-treating, all to benefit the San Francisco Arts Commission–a non-profit city organization dedicated to keeping urban art alive. Halloween Film Fest for Kids at SFPL
Bring your little ghouls and goblins over to the Golden Gate Valley Branch of the SF Public Library for a mini-film fest of short Halloween movies based on popular kids books. Don’t forget your bookbag because after the film the kiddos will want to stock up on some of their own favorite Halloween tales to take home. Fri. 3-4 p.m. San Francisco. Free. 0-12. Event details.

Sunday Streets: Berkeley
This Sunday, it’s okay to let your kids play in the street. Cycle, stroll, dance, discover, skate and ride those trikes in the open street. Superheroes and Villains at Playland-Not-at-the-Beach
Calling all Super Kids and grown-up sidekicks! Fly, swim or run faster than a speeding bullet-train to Playland for our celebration of the great American superhero tradition. Come dressed as a favorite superhero (or villain) for a super prize! Sat., & Sun. 10 a.m. -5 p.m. El Cerrito. $10-$15. All Ages. Event details.

Costume Swap Day at Color Me Mine
Put those outgrown kids costumes to good use!  Bring by last year’s outfit in for a new-to-you costume for your little trick-or-treaters Drop off your costume anytime between now and 4 p.m. on October 12th, and get a costume voucher plus a voucher for free studio time! Then just show up at the store between 6-8 p.m. on October 12th to claim this year’s costume. Bring the kiddos for try-ons, because there are no exchanges…until next year! Diwali Festival of Lights
The 11th Annual Diwali Festival of Lights is a showcase of multicultural music, dance, workshops, arts, frolic and fun. Kids will delight in the magic shows, henna, petting zoos and pony rides. The Zoppé Family Circus
The circus is coming to town, and the whole family will enjoy this traditional Italian circus featuring a Unicycle Built for Two, the flying trapeze act known as the Daring Jones Duo, Nino the clown, acrobatics, and canine capers all under the big top of a 500 seat tent. Marin County

Biketoberfest 2013
Get geared up for Marin County’s one and only Biketoberfest, where Oktoberfest meets bikes. Kids Zone features a bouncy house, bike decorating, face painting, a bike carousel, and more cycle-themed fun. Harvest Celebration at Slide Ranch
Always wanted to stuff a scarecrow but never had the chance? Well all the more reason to pack up the kiddos and head to Slide Ranch’s Harvest Celebration. Think old-timey country fair meets working farm, where kids will have a chance to get up close with the farm animals, churn butter, and spin wool. Plus live music, organic food, face painting, a pickle workshop, beekeeping and blacksmithing demos, and native plant hikes all in the setting of Slide Ranch’s Muir Beach location.
