When they wake up on Christmas morning this year, Sandra Bullock’s kids will only find three presents each under the tree—and for a pretty good reason.

Appearing on TODAY to promote her new film, Bird Box, Bullock explained that in the past she has gone a little over the top when it comes to gift-giving for her son Louis, eight, and her daughter Laila, six. In fact the whole family tends to overdo things at Christmas so this year they all agreed to pull back.

“But this year we just stopped,” she shared. “We just stopped because there’s so much happening in the world where people don’t have anything. And we said, ‘Why don’t we just make this about other people?’ And they were amazing about it.”

It can be hard to hold back when all you want to do is give your kids the world, but sometimes less really is more.
