If you can’t remember the last time you had a spontaneous family adventure or (gasp!) an unplanned Saturday afternoon, it’s time to shake things up a bit. No need to leave town, just put on your Seattle uniform (fleece jacket and Dansko clogs or Chaco sandals… bonus points for Mariners, Huskies, Seahawks or Sounders gear) and grab the gang. It’s time to act like a tourist for the day and visit (or revisit) our favorite touristy Seattle hot spots.

Discovery Park

Play Outside at Seattle’s Best Parks
Seattle has some of the nation’s best (and biggest) city parks. If you’ve gotten stuck in a park rut, pick one of our sure-fire winners to liven up your daily walk, bike ride or playground visit.

For a saunter on your Strider Bike, head to Green Lake Park. This 2.8 mile widely paved path is the perfect low-impact loop trail for walkers, joggers, strollers (or stroller-ers), kids on bikes and for walking your pooch on a sunny (or rainy) day. Save some change for an ice cream at the concession stand near the boat rentals.

For a nature-y trail with huge trees, gorgeous flowers and a fun boardwalk, hit the Washington Park Arboretum. This is the perfect park to bring your binoculars and bug catching equipment. It’s right in the middle of the city (just adjacent to the UW and 520), but is jam-packed with wildlife and flora that your budding naturalist will adore!

For a place to run wild, dig in the dirt, frolic in the forest and skip rocks in the salt water: visit Discovery Park. With more than 500 acres on the Magnolia Bluff, this park is the Swiss Army Knife of parks… with a little something for everyone. Toddlers will love digging in the big sand pit on the bluff, and older kids will have a blast building driftwood forts down by the beach. You’ll love the amazing vistas of the Puget Sound.
