You don’t have to travel all the way to Australia to say “g’day” to some outback animals— just head north of Seattle to the Outback Kangaroo Farm in Arlington, Washington. But you can expect far more than just kangaroos—the farm is also home to wallabies, wallaroos, llamas, alpaca, pygmy goats, parrots, peacocks and more! Joey and Ray Strom have created this family-friendly animal experience where you can actually wander through the kangaroos that are roaming freely around the farm. All of the animals are exceptionally kid-friendly and used to visitors—you can even pet the turkey!
Go: March – October, or by appointment during the other months of the year. The farm is open Wednesday – Sunday with 40-minute tours starting at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Approximate travel time: Arlington is about an hour north of Seattle on I-5 – perfect for a day trip with young kids.
What to see: Don’t miss meeting Boulder, the banana-loving lemur, and try to spot a mama kangaroo with a little joey in her pouch!
Possible lunch spots: Continue your animal adventure with lunch at Rhodes River Ranch, just up the road. The restaurant overlooks the horse training area and stables so you can watch while you eat.
How to dress: The farm is entirely outdoors and the weather in Arlington can be more extreme than in Seattle. Dress in layers and wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty. Rainboots for kids are a great idea if it’s been wet out.
What to bring: Throw some hand sanitizer in your bag for keeping little hands clean after touching the animals. If you are bringing a child under age one, we suggest a carrier over a stroller. Don’t forget your camera!
Bonus: Check out Downtown Arlington before heading back to the city – it’s small and family-friendly. The School Box, an educational supply and bookstore, is a favorite for all-ages.
Cost of trip: Admission and tour is $7 for ages 2-12 and $8 for 12+ and adults. Groups of 16 or more costs $6 per person.
