Meal kit delivery services have become a busy parent’s go-to. They offer pre-portioned, high quality ingredients with cutting edge recipes that are delivered straight to your front door—eliminating the need to haul hangry kiddos to the store. But the downside can often be excessive packaging and food miles. However, Fresh Plate (Seattle’s newest meal kit delivery service) is changing the way Seattle families eat local, healthy and from scratch by offering ingredients from Northwest farmers, fisherman, ranchers and artisans. If this service sounds like a win-win for your family, scroll down for the deets.

How It Works
Fresh Plate’s goal is to make it easier for families to cook healthy, delicious meals from scratch and that starts with the company’s easy-to-use website. Simply click on “See Plans” to customize your delivery which is delivered every other week. Select either a two-person or four-person plan and your meal preferences which include everything from Creamy Butternut Pasta Bake with Kale Salad, to Korean-Style Beef Tacos with Pickled Veggies, to Cauliflower Rice Carne Asada Bowls with Tomato-Avocado. The choices are all individually unique and loaded with good-for-you ingredients. For each delivery, you will choose two recipes from the week’s menu or you can let Fresh Plate pick your recipes based on your family’s meal preferences. If you’re looking for gluten-free or vegetarian recipes, Fresh Plate offers both.

What’s in the Box
Each Fresh Plate box contains perfectly portioned ingredients (for two meals) along with the step-by-step chef created recipes. When you open your box, you will find farm-fresh, local produce, meat with no added hormones and sustainably sourced seafood along with everything else you need to cook two healthy dinners from scratch in about 30 min. Meals are delivered in cardboard boxes with box liners, cooling packs and plastic bottles (for liquids) and are all re-usable. Before your next delivery, simply leave the boxes and containers on your doorstep and Fresh Plate will pick them up. And since Fresh Plate is extremely conscious about our environment, they will make every effort to clean, sanitize and re-use the items. Psst…the portion cups, deli cups and plastic sleeves are all compostable.
Customize Your Delivery
Since meals are delivered every other week, you’ll need to select your menu choices by midnight of the Wednesday prior to your delivery week. If you’re planning to be out of town or need to skip or cancel delivery for any reason, simply click on your account by midnight on the Wednesday before your scheduled delivery to make the change. It’s that easy!
Recipes From Northwest Chefs
Fresh Plate has partnered with Northwest farms and chefs to make cooking delish (fresh) meals from scratch a snap. Chefs like Josh Silverman (a “Locavore” Chef who has been a part of the Whatcom County food scene since 2006 when he took over as Chef/Owner of Nimbus Restaurant) create the step-by-step recipes and local farmers, fishermen and ranchers provide the ingredients.

How Fresh Plate Was Started
While most of the national meal kit companies serve customers in Washington, only a few operate in the state of Washington and most of the food is sourced out of state. Todd McGiverin, owner of Fresh Plate and a Bellingham resident and grocery industry executive, wanted to change that by putting Washington’s local food producers “in the box.” McGiverin recently said, “Like a lot of people, I love a good meal at home. But making a healthy meal takes time and for me, trying new recipes usually didn’t go well. About a year ago, my family tried meal kits and it was a great experience. Dinner didn’t take long to cook, the recipes were new and different and we didn’t have to worry about what’s for dinner.” While unpacking one of the meal kits, McGiverin began to wonder why he couldn’t have a local meal kit delivery service? It would reduce food miles and packaging waste and support the food producers in the Northwest; it seemed like a win-win. And from there, Fresh Plate was conceived.

How Fresh Plate Differs From Other Local Meal Kit Delivery Services
If you’re wondering how Fresh Plate differs from other local meal kit delivery services in our area, there are two significant ways. First off, instead of a prix fixe menu, Fresh Plate allows its customers to choose specific recipes for each delivery. Each week, six new recipes are added to the website and customers can select two. Second, with the exception of a few kitchen staples like oil, salt and pepper, Fresh Plate provides all the pre-measured ingredients needed for the recipes which means you won’t be scrambling around the kitchen or rushing to the store to pick up one or two items you don’t have in your pantry.
Where Does Fresh Plate Deliver and How Much Does it Cost?
At this time, Fresh Plate delivers within the state of Washington. During the sign-up process, you will be prompted to enter your zip code to confirm they deliver to your area. A two-person box contains two meals for two people (four total servings) for $48; a four-person box contains two meals for four people (8 total servings) for $96.
