Fresh-caught salmon pulled straight from the Sound. Gorgeous (and cheap!) $10 flower bouquets. The OMG peaches from Sosio’s. There are oh-so many reasons to visit Pike Place Market in the summer, and now you can add another—the Can Can Kitchen and Cabaret’s all-ages matinée show, Ice Cream Sundae (and Saturdays Too!), to your list. It’s a kitschy romp through classic musicals like Grease, Dirty Dancing and Hairspray, and it’s got total family appeal. Read on for the inside scoop!
One Sweet Show
Sitting down for brunch at Ice Cream Sundae (and Saturdays Too!) is akin to pulling out the musical movies you grew up with and watching the best scenes from each with your mini-me. The normally Paris-in-the-20’s theater vibe is now set to doo-wop ice cream shop, like grandma and grandpa used to visit. And bright colors, and campy costumes help to bring it home. As do larger-than-life performances by Tom Tom the Phenomenon, Joel from Personnel, Lindy Lou, Alissa Bliss and Legs Benedict. This talented group takes to the stage, singing faves like “Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee!” and “Love is Strange” (psst… that’s the Sylvia and Mickey song), while can can kicking away. And when this crew isn’t singing, they’re swinging from cloud swings or parading down the center stage aisle to get up close and personal with their captive audience.
The Right Space
The space is part of what makes this show one your kiddos will love. It’s small so they can always see what’s going on. And the performers are right there, taking in the smiles and enthusiasm of their youngest audience members. It’s easy to feel like you’re part of the show when the singers and dancers waltz by and give your cutie a quick wink or big smile as they croon like modern-day Frankie Avalons. In short, the show puts out one fun-loving scene after another!

Earn a Participation Trophy
Sure your Little will love the music, costumes and dancing. But the real show stopper (from where they sit anyway) is the audience participation. And there’s plenty of it. Be ready to chat with the host, dance like no one’s watching or possibly be invited to strut your stuff on stage when you’re in the audience. It’s one of those small theater perks that adds entertainment and intimacy to an already fantastic show. And trust us, your sidekick will love watching you ham it up, or getting the chance to get in on the action themselves.
Whether you reserve tickets for the 12:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. show, brunch is on the menu. To please everyone’s palate, Chef Gilbert has rolled Pike Place Market faves like Beecher’s cheese, Uli’s sausage and fresh, seasonal produce into creative fare that truly represents the Emerald City. Dishes like Spam and seared Ahi tuna sliders show off our Pacific Islander roots, while the honey crisp apple salad and Dungeness crab beignets pay homage to more local ones. You’ll find plenty of kid-friendly choices too, so bring your appetite to the show!
The Can Can Kitchen and Cabaret is tucked away in the Pike Place Market Underground maze. But if you know where you’re going, it’s super easy to find. The theater is in the Corner Market Building, at the intersection of Pike St. and Pike Place, in the same building as Storyville Coffee. Take the stairs down to the theater entrance, which is off to your right. You can’t miss it! It’s recommended that families arrive 30 minutes prior to show time to get settled.
Good to Know:
1. If being right in the action is the way you and your crew like to play it, go with the VIP seating, along the runway stage. Otherwise, choose General Seating at the booths and tables. Either way, there’s not a bad seat in the house!
2. Noise cancelling headphones are a good idea if you’ve got a wee one with you. The sound booms loudly and clearly in this intimate theater.
3. There are a few PG moments in the show that will most likely go unnoticed by younger kiddos. But if you’ve got specific questions about show content, give the theater a jingle at 206-652-0832 to get answers.
4. The show run time is about one hour, with a short breather so you can share your favorite moments with your crew before you’re on to the next.
