Ever seen live birds in a toy store? It’s time! Planet Happy Toys, the new store just up the hill from University Village is home to finches and doves – who live in a refurbished vintage cooler. There’s also Littlefoot, the adorable baby hedgehog who lives in an old converted television cabinet. The menargie is fitting for PHT, as owners Bridgett and Hunter Brown are all about nature and sustainable living. PHT is already a successful web business, and you can still shop online and find a wondrous selection of awesome toys with a conscience. Parents love the clean, modern showroom. The store features a “living wall” whose plants keep the entire space’s air clean. Every product, from plush animals to wooden food to books to building blocks from Haba, is labeled for its ability to meet seven standards: Fairly Traded, Organic, Socially Responsible, Ingenious Design, Multi-Use, Green, and Natural. We especially love the rubberwood (a non-splintering hardwood) sets from ImagiPLAY ($23.95). Choose from Amazon, Sahara, Savanna, Arctic, and more – each set includes a background environment and animals from the region. PHT also has a nature art table with projects going on all the time. One more thing: For every single purchase at PHT (in the store or online), a tree is planted. Yay, forest!
