One of the newest sandwich shops on the Seattle-scene, with sustainability as its hook, is Homegrown. They have a yummy grilled cheese (gouda on potato bread) on their kids menu that is served with fresh fruit for $5, or you can get a version with turkey added on as well. We suggest the Queen Anne locations – it’s easiest to maneuver with little ones in tow and find a table. Locations in Capitol Hill, Queen Anne and Fremont.
If you’re walking around downtown and have a kiddo with a hankering for a grilled cheese (which really means that they are tired and hungry and you need to feed them before braving the drive home!), swing into the Nordstrom Café on the top floor of their flagship downtown store. Their grilled cheese comes with tomato soup (that you moms and dads can eat if your little ones aren’t into soup) and a drink for about $5. Plus, the service is super speedy here and you pay before you eat, so you can zip out as soon as you’re done eating. 500 Pine Street, on the top floor of Nordstrom. Locations also in Bellevue, Northgate and Southcenter Nordstroms.
For little ones that are grilled cheese purists — nothing fancy allowed – parents love Panera Bread. Kids will think this is a standard grilled cheese, but you’ll know that it’s made on fresh white whole-grain bread, baked daily in their stores and made with real cheese, not processed. Served with a squeezable organic yogurt on the side (save it to put in the freezer at home to make it less messy to eat!) for about $5. Bonus points to Panera for their quick service and abundant high chairs too. Locations in Capitol Hill, Northgate, Bellevue, Kent, Redmond and Renton.
Luna Park Café
For kid tested and approved grilled cheese in West Seattle, stop by Luna Park Café – it’s a great casual sit-down restaurant with an excellent menu for mom and dad too! Plus, they have an awesome outdoor dining space and milkshakes that are yummy. Be warned that it can get pretty busy here during happy hour, so try it for lunch instead. 2918 Southwest Avalon Way in West Seattle.
This hidden gem is tucked away in Magnolia, just up from Interbay, and has grilled cheese that your kids will devour. All of their sandwiches are made on fresh bread from Macrina Bakery and are made right in front of your eyes. We don’t suggest Melt if you’re in a hurry because each sandwich is created when ordered. It isn’t necessarily on the fast food list, but trust us, it’s worth the short wait! 2818 Thorndyke Avenue West in Magnolia/Interbay.
Three Girls Bakery
The grilled cheese at Three Girls Bakeries will, without a doubt, become a favorite of the grilled cheese fans in your house! Although they offer a menu with a lot of fancy cheese options, their kid’s sammy is basic and delicious, but without that mass produced taste. We highly recommend a cup of their chili on the side and a baked treat for dessert! In Ballard at 6209- 15th Avenue Northwest or in Pike Place Market downtown.
