It’s Memorial Day Weekend which also means it’s the unofficial kickoff to camping and road trip season. Since we know traveling with little ones can be hard (especially in bumper to bumper traffic), we’ve put together a fantastic weekend of family fun right here in the Emerald City. On our radar: a ginormous music fest under the Needle, a hands-on nautical event, a lively production based on a popular tale and a scenic journey through the Mercer Slough. If you’re still looking for more weekend ideas, scroll down and be sure to check out our Memorial Day activity guide.

Northwest Folklife Festival (pictured)
There’s a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ for everyone at the largest folk festival in the country. With more than 5,000 diverse performers, an awesome Discovery Zone for kids and participatory dances and workshops, we guarantee you’ll tire the little ones out without even trying. Bonus: On Monday, catch a special Kindiependent Showcase with local kindie faves (think: Recess Monkey, The Not-Its!, Brian Vogan and his Good Buddies, Eli Rosenblatt and Johnny Bregar) . Fri.-Mon. Event details.

NW Seaport’s Classic Workboat Show
Rain or shine, head to Lake Union Park to see, step aboard and experience visiting tugboats, fishing boats and emergency response vessels. Plus, meet the captains and crew who pilot these vessels and get an up-close look at the long-established prime movers of our regional economy. Sat.-Sun. Event details.

Family Science Weekend
Take the fam to the Seattle Aquarium to participate in fun hands-on activities and to learn about the science and research taking place at the Seattle Aquarium through special talks, diver shows and demonstrations. Sat.–Mon. Event details.

Canoe Mercer Slough
Kick off your Memorial Day Weekend (and canoeing season!) by exploring the beautiful Mercer Slough Nature Park by boat. See how this amazing ecosystem functions and with a little luck, catch a glimpse of the otters, herons, turtles and other wildlife who call the Mercer Slough home. Sat.-Sun. Event details.

Charlotte’s Web
In this latest SecondStory Repertory production, Wilbur has a problem: how to avoid winding up as pork chops! But Charlotte, a fine writer and true friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman. Designed for all ages, this classic tale will explore bravery, selfless love and the true meaning of friendship. Sat.-Sun. Event details.

Memorial Day Train Rides
If you and your little train buffs are itching to get out of the city for the day, head east to North Bend and celebrate Memorial Day Weekend with a scenic train ride. This special 75-minute steam train run is in addition to the railroad’s usual weekend train schedule and will take you through the Cascade foothills of the Upper Snoqualmie Valley, including a ride to the top of Snoqualmie Falls. Sat.-Mon. Event details.
