As a talented comedian and Late Night host, Seth Meyers knows a thing or two about how to capture an audience’s attention. But on Apr. 8, his newborn son did all the attention-grabbing as he made his entrance into the world. Seth Meyer’s wife gave birth in their apartment building lobby and it’s a moment we’re sure they—and their neighbors— will never forget.
Meyers walked his wife Alexi Ashe through the lobby of their New York City apartment building, where an Uber was waiting just outside—but that’s when Ashe she realized there was no way they would make it. That’s when their second child, Axel Strahl, made her dramatic entrance.
“I called 911, and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We’re about to have a baby—we’re having a baby—we had a baby,’” Meyers told his Late Night audience.
As Ashe argued that the baby was coming any moment, Meyers was trying to reassure his wife that everything was fine. And then just like that Ashe calmly declared, “The baby is out.” Talk about a speedy delivery!
The fire department quickly arrived at the scene and cut the umbilical cord, while neighbors brought out blankets and towels fresh from their dryers to keep the baby warm. The doormen helped usher other building tenants arriving home, away from the lobby.
As Meyers hilariously recounted, “Her legs were like, facing the elevators and thank God nobody came down because that would have made for so many awkward interactions.”
Meyers was clearly emotional as he recounted the whole story to his Late Night audience, but never one to let a laugh pass by, he joked “I’m getting choked up thinking about how brave I was.”
