They say it takes a village. Just ask Krista Patterson, founder of Discover the Glow. This local mama created this women’s center when she was struggling with prenatal depression. It’s since grown to a true haven for moms in any stage of motherhood. From classes for kids (think mommy and me yoga, music and playtime) to fitness groups and even happy hours, Discover the Glow is the resource you’ve been waiting for. Read on for the full scoop.
Classes for Kids!
A women’s center that includes a fab play space? We’re sold and you will be, too once you take a peek at the elevated ball pit, slide and tot-friendly play area. Classes for little tots are offered on a daily basis, except Wed.’s and Sun.’s when the center is closed. The newest addition to the offerings is Gymboree at The Glow. While Gymboree Play & Learn 1 at Gymboree franchises includes young ones 0-6 months, Level 1 at the Glow accommodates all pre-crawlers since a Level 2 isn’t offered. Little movers will be introduced to tummy time, flashlight play and first songs.
There are at least five other child specific classes to choose from like Little Beats Music and Dance Class for ages 0-5 years, Toddler Time, Family Yoga & Play, Kids’ Yoga, and Mommy and Me Yoga. The center keeps up their monthly calendar so for a full rundown click here.
And, if you’d like the option to come by for a casual playtime, visit the center Mon., Tues. and Thurs.’s from noon-3p.m.
Work It Out, Mama
Discover the Glow is all about offering specialized classes and resources to moms in all stages of motherhood. If you’re experiencing diastasis recti or in layman terms, abdominal separation, there’s a class to fix that. Check out Core Restore, an hour-long class that focuses solely on abdominals while ignoring the classic crunch.
Looking for something a bit more intense? Then there’s the SuperMom Boot Camp that’s taught by a mom with a degree in exercise science. While the combination of the words boot and camp can be intimidating, the instructor, Alex makes the class fun and can modify the workout to any mom’s fitness level (yes, even total beginners).
For a workout that doesn’t feel like a workout you’ll want to attend the center’s hula hooping sessions. You’ll be surprised with what your hips can do (cue Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”). This unique form of exercise incorporates lots of fun movements and will provide a full body work out. Don’t worry if you can’t immediately keep the hoop around your waist because this class like all of the others at the center are meant to be fun!
Finally, there’s the Booty Blast class that most closely resembles a ballet barre fusion class and multiple yoga classes for the yogis.
Got a Bump?
With the exception of Core Restore and Hoop Fit, all offered exercise classes may be modified to accommodate women and their growing bumps. A prenatal support group is currently offered once a week and is free, but donations are welcome.
Let’s Get Crafty
Sometimes you just need to get out of the house. If cabin fever hits, beeline it to The Find Your Happy (Hour!). Hosted in the café area with a hand-crafted wooden table and throw pillows for an intimate setting, this social hour is for moms who are looking for something to do other than working out. Expect this hour to be part meeting new mama friends and part tapping into your inner Martha Stewart. Activities include beadwork, adult coloring and collaging with no prior experience necessary.
More Glow Fun
“Let’s talk about it” and “You are not alone,” are two quotes that are painted on the Glow’s exterior windows. The Glow tries its best to offer the entire package and so they have partnered with local practitioners for sought after services. Moms can make appointments for acupuncture, massages and Shirodhara treatments. Also, manicures and pedicures are coming in August.
Activities at the women’s center range between $5 and $10/family and monthly memberships are offered at $80/family or $70/military families.
Good to Know: Dads are encouraged to participate Sat.’s sessions at 10 a.m. The Daddies’ Playgroup will draw them in with donuts and keep them for the dad-to-dad conversation.
