Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?
Eileen Andrade-Kitching: I believe my customers value the opportunity to meet other moms who are going through this incredible life change of becoming a mother at the same time and learning in a supportive setting. New moms are usually overwhelmed and unprepared for the decisions that need to be made and the exhaustion and hormones of new motherhood. To have a group of women who are supportive and experiencing similar dilemmas is invaluable—add to that an experienced professional facilitator who educates, supports and provides many ideas and evidence based research of the value of those ideas and you have OC Moms Connect!
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
EA: After 14 years of working in multiple settings with children and families I believed that my experience would carry me through becoming a mom to twins with ease…. I was wrong! It was overwhelming and exhausting and that was only the first week at home. I didn’t realize how different it becomes when it is your own children and the decisions you make feel as if they will have lifelong consequences in their development. I also realized I was comfortable in the care and development of my babies when other moms didn’t even have this experience to fall back on. I also felt incredibly isolated and didn’t know how to reach out or find other new moms. This made me believe that there should be something in Orange County that supported new moms beyond meet-up groups. I wanted to provide a place for moms to feel accepted and learn about their babies and their new role as mothers in a supportive way. I also wanted to provide information that was current and backed in evidence based research not the fad of the moment. I believe that moms want to do the absolute best for their child and understand that the love and care they give their baby now does have an enormous impact on who they will become.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
EA: Be passionate about what you do! Your customers will always see your passion and want to be a part of it! Also, if you are a parent, decide early on what balance means to you and create boundaries around your family and work time.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
EA: Create a schedule that works with your child care situation and really stick to it. There will always be emergencies and crisis on both ends that will pull you away so you want to be sure you are not already behind! Also, doing what makes you happy makes you a better mom every time.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
EA: With OC Moms Connect, every time a new mother talks about how much she has learned and what an impact that has had on their parenting. As a parent…everything! I love watching these two amazing little girls become their true selves knowing they are loved unconditionally. It is an honor to see this same connection happen with hundreds of new moms over the years!
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
EA: Yes! Red Tricycle readers can get 10% off our 8 week workshops.
