Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?
Becky Pierce: Smocking Birds is a unique baby and children’s boutique! Our customers come to us for one-of-a-kind baby shower gifts, birthday presents, and the classic hard-to-find clothes for their special family pictures. We offer our complimentary gift wrapping services with each purchase to add that customized touch to our customers. We value our customers’ opinions and keep them in mind when we are purchasing new lines. We expanded our store to accommodate customers who had asked about bigger sizes. Now we have preemie up to size 6 for boys and girls. Being a boutique, we offer friendly one-on-one service with each customer to ensure a close relationship with our customers. We are the one stop shop for babies and children’s needs.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
BP: I have been smocking children’s fashions for over 30 years and have been giving dresses and daygowns as gifts to my family and friends. Many of my friends have told me to open up a store where I would sell my handmade outfits and teach people how to smock. When I saw the opportunity to open up a store in The OC Mix at SOCO I knew my traditional taste in clothes would fit well in the environment there. From new moms to grandmas, I have been able to fulfill the wishes for their desire of bringing back that classic youthful look.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
BP: My advice would be to start off slow, listen to customers, and create something that is different. The fastest way to gain expose is to get yourself promoted on every media available. Be unique! Create a memorable experience each time they visit, so they will always remember you and keep coming back.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
BP: Always put your family first, and make your family a part of your passion. They will be excited for you and easy to balance your dream and family together.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
BP: My proudest moment was last Sunday, celebrating two years of business with my daughter and first employee. In the two years we have expanded to three times our original size. This success has exceeded my expectations.
