The first time you held hands while roller skating, the song was probably something by Air Supply or Olivia Newton John. These days, it might be Ariana Grande and Iggy Izalea. Regardless of whatever generation gap may be present, your kids will definitely want in on some skating fun. San Diego has a variety of kid-friendly skating rinks for both the roller and ice aficionados. Flip through the slideshow to see what’s in store for your little skaters.

UTC Ice Sports Arena

If you're not sure your SoCal kiddo is cut out for this cold weather sport, UTC Ice Sports Arena offers a free trial lesson every Saturday at 11:15 a.m. The introductory lesson covers the fundamentals of ice skating, such as balance, movements, and the basic terminology. If your little skaters decide this is the sport for them, they can proceed onto the Figure or Hockey Academy and hone their mad skills on the ice. Space for these free lessons is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the folks at the arena recommend getting there at least 30 minutes early to get fitted for skates. Other items recommended are warm clothes, gloves, snug, knee-high socks, protective pads, and a helmet. For those who have already reached their potential or just want to free-wheel it, public skate times are offered every day. Prices are quite reasonable for this option, as general admission is $12, with kids 5 and under at only $10. Skate rentals are $3/person.
