With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there’s no shortage of ways to show your love this weekend. Head to the New Children’s Museum to make Valentine’s Day cards or take a cooking class, or create string heart art at Michael’s stores. If hearts and flowers aren’t your thing, take a old-fashioned train ride in East County, or learn how to photograph your garden. Super heroes can also head to Del Mar for a day of fun with the Marvel Experience. Have a great weekend!

Create String Heart Art
You know you’re bringing up a house of heartbreakers, right? Before they get all sassy on you, head to Michaels for some String Art, where they’ll make hearts for you, instead of them (those waaay too grown-up looking adolescents in their homeroom). Sat., 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Michael’s Stores throughout San Diego County, $2/kiddo. Ages 3 and up. Event details

Don’t Try This at Home
Check out live science shows that highlight all the messy, loud and shocking experiments you can’t do at home as performed by the Fleet Science Show demonstrators. See what happens when a roll of toilet paper is combined with a leaf blower, watch frozen water destroy a metal pipe, witness an epic ping pong explosion and more. Up to three different shows throughout the day; one show performed each hour. Fri. – Sun., 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, $14.95-$17.95 admission. All ages. Event details.

DIY Valentine’s Day Cards
Design a card for someone you love! Use recycled materials and colored pencils to show off your creativity and appreciation. Fri. – Sun., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., The New Children’s Museum, Free with $10 admission. All ages. Event details.

Ride an Old-Time Train
Come see San Diego’s backcountry from the relaxed comfort of an old-time train! Listen as the conductor bellows the time-honored “All Aboard” and settle into your seat in the 85-year-old coach as the engineer signals his departure. Your train quietly slips away from the nearly 100-year-old Campo train depot and the long-lost, clickety-clack of steel wheels on steel rails clearly announces you are no longer of the 21st century. Sat. and Sun., 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, Free. All ages. Event details.

Kids in the Garden: Fun with Photography in the Garden
Kids will bring their own cameras and review color, focus and zoom as they practice taking photos. After class, kids can review the photos with their parents at home, resize the five best ones (to 2 MB) and send them to Farmer Jones to be printed for display. Sat., 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Alta Vista Botanical Gardens,  $5/kids, $3/adults. All ages. Event details.

The Marvel Experience
Join forces with Marvel’s heroes on a mission to save the planet, courtesy of this one-of-a-kind, hyper-reality attraction that takes you through seven colossal Domes. Get the chance to fly with Iron Man, swing with Spider-Man, smash with Hulk and more as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newest recruit. Experience the world’s only 360-degree, 3-D stereoscopic theater and blast off on a state-of-the-art 4-D motion ride where you’ll feel every twist and turn. Fri. – Sun., Del Mar Fairgrounds, $24.50 – $29.50/person. Ages 6 and up. Event details.
