We’ve been having such amazing weather in San Diego that it’s almost mandatory you spend the weekend outdoors! So, we’re featuring five great outdoor activities that will both entertain and teach your kids. You can celebrate the Lunar Near Year at the San Diego Tet festival, an annual tradition. Or you can get your kids moving with a one-mile “marathon” designed specifically for kids. You can also go tidepooling and learn all about what it’s like to live between a rock and a hard place. Still not sure? Keep reading — we have more suggestions.
San Diego Tet Festival
Have your kids ever seen a real live (and interactive) dragon dance? If the answer is no, it’s time to celebrate the Lunar New Year! Tet, the most important holiday in Vietnam, is a celebration that involves family, food and the coming year. Don’t miss the opening ceremony celebration, complete with firecrackers and lion dances. Fri, 5:00 pm; Sat and Sun, 11:00 am. Balboa Park. $4 for children/$5 for adults. All ages. Event Details.
Whale Days Festival
Last year, over 5,000 people attended the Whale Days Festival. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to learn and play. The interactive and hands on displays include a walk-through gray whale, free face painting, live sea creatures, a kids art mural coloring project, a train ride, a bounce house and more. Don’t miss the live music, presented on the “whale of a stage.” Clever. Sat. 11:00 am. The Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Free. All ages. Event Details.
Whether you live inland or coastal, San Diegans live close to the ocean. It’s time to learn about it! Start on Saturday by taking your kids on a Tidepooling Adventure, where they’ll discover what it’s like to survive “between a rock and a hard place.” We’re in the middle of the best time for tidepooling, so don’t pass up this great opportunity. Reservations required. Sat, 1:00 pm. Falst Point, La Jolla. $12. All Ages. Event Details.
Underwater Parks Day
Your family can enjoy a day of fun and learning. No, the two aren’t mutually exclusive! Underwater Parks Day at Sea Life teaches kids about Marine Protected Areas in an engaging way. Expect fun, kid-friendly activities: giveaways, an underwater dive show, an educational craft event, a conservation expo with hands-on exhibits and more. Sat, 10:00 am. Sea Life Carlsbad Aquarium. $15 for kids 3-12/$20 for adults. All ages. Event Details.
Kids Marathon Mile
Is your family up for running (or walking) a mile? The marathon is specifically geared toward kids 12 and under and takes place at Legoland. It’s a non-competitive event involving age-staged races that loop through the park and everyone’s a winner. Registered kids receive a finisher medal, T-shirt and park hopper ticket. Sat, 8:00 am. Legoland California. $20-35. All ages. Event Details.
