Interactive Art Installation: No Rules… Except!
Think back to a time when you jumped on the bed as a kid. Remember the joy of jumping high and the weightlessness you felt? Now imagine a whole room lined with mattresses, accompanied by full permission to bounce til your heart’s content! Throughout their milestone birthday year, The New Children’s Museum will welcome back some of the memorable contemporary artists from the past ten years. In the works is the return of one of the most talked about installations in the past 10 years, a reimagined reprisal of No Rules…. Except which merges artist Brian Dick’s commitment to recycled materials with an exuberant celebration of the childish joy of jumping on the bed. Fri.-Sun. Event details.
Hullabaloo Concert on the Waterfront
The perfect way to end your weekend – – bring the whole family, throw down a picnic blanket and enjoy the happy tunes of Hullabaloo Band as the sun sets over San Diego Bay. There will be kid-friendly, pre-show entertainment provided by several local businesses as well. Sun. Event details.
Farm Animal Fridays
Come learn about and meet a new animal on the last Friday of every month! You’ll get an opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals, hear a special storytime, and participate in a themed craft or activity. Free with museum admission which is $8/person. Fri. Event details.
Visitors of all ages are invited to celebrate spring amid the region’s most spectacular historical gardens at Fiesta Botanica: Celebrating Balboa Park’s Plants & Gardens. The family-friendly festival kicks off with the Fiesta Botanica Wagon Parade along El Prado. The festivities continue with horticultural-themed lectures and demonstrations, hands-on activities for kids, live entertainment, tours of the park’s historic gardens, plant sales, food trucks, and more. This year’s celebration will also pay special recognition to the 150-year anniversary of the park’s founding by the City of San Diego Board of Trustees on May 26, 1868. Sat. Event details.
Ethnic Food Fair
Nothing unites people more than food. With Olympic spirit still in the air, bring the whole family to learn about world cultures and enjoy an amazing spread of food from over 30 countries. The day is filled with dancers and music from Israel, India, Ireland and more. Watch performers at your leisure on the grass or from benches as your kids try baklava, paella, and samosas. Open Cockpit Days
Come sit in a plane! Several aircraft will be open for visitors to experience Marine aviation from a pilot’s perspective. See 31 historical aircraft up close in an outdoor setting. Indoor displays include hundreds of artifacts from the earliest days of aviation to the present day. Free admission and parking. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is aboard Marine Corps Air Station-Miramar. The sentry-free museum entrance is on Miramar Rd., 3.9 miles east of I-805 and 1.3 miles west of I-15. South Bay Bird Walk
Take a stroll with a San Diego National Wildlife Refuges volunteer docent and learn about the hundreds of species of birds that call the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge home. Hike is approximately 0.8 miles long total (0.4 mile out, 0.4 mile back) along the newly-installed “Bayside Birding & Walking Trail.” Bring binoculars if you have them. Aquatics Adventures by the Bay
Enjoy a free day of fun on the Bay to promote water and boating safety month. Click here to register for water activities from kayaking to SUP Yoga and youth fishing. There will be food trucks and a kids corner with bounce houses, face painting, a bike rodeo, scavenger hunt and arts and crafts. Sat. Event details.
The San Diego Public Library will host its 3rd How-To Festival on Sat., May 26th, 2018 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at 14 San Diego Public Library locations. The How-To Festival is an interactive community educational event with something for everyone and for all ages and with presenters are community experts from all walks of life. Participating libraries will host a variety of free community presentations and workshops throughout the day. Attendees will learn everything from how to dance the flamenco, how to grow a mini urban garden, how to overcome stress, how to arrange flowers, how to wear a kimono, and much more. Sat. Vista Strawberry Festival
Vista was once known as the “Strawberry Capital of the World!” Head to San Diego County’s only celebration of the Strawberry at this fun festival. There will be live entertainment on multiple stages, bands, local craft brews in the beer garden, food, carnival rides and contests! Additionally, you’ll find 400 vendors that include strawberry desserts, food, crafts and local shops. Contests include Little Ms. Strawberry Shortcake, Strawberry Costume, Vista’s Got Talent, Pie-Eating and many more! Sun. Event details.
