From a fun mom’s night out at the movies to cultural celebrations and animal walks, we’ve rounded up some great events happening this Mother’s Day weekend. Head to Ocean Beach for the annual Kite Festival. Take the family (including the furry kids) to the Walk for Animals event at Liberty Station. Or head to the San Diego Zoo to enjoy a variety of beautiful flowers at the Garden Festival. Whatever you do, we wish you a very happy and relaxing Mother’s Day!
Mom’s Night Out at the Movies
Enjoy a fun mom’s night out at the movies to watch a screening of “Moms’ Night Out.” The theater is reserved exclusively for this event that includes prizes, light apps, dessert, mingling with friends and a fun night away from the kiddos. San Diego Zoo’s Discovery Days: Garden Festival
Celebrate the Zoo’s fabulous foliage with displays, tours and activities on Mother’s Day weekend! Discover how the horticulturists grow the Zoo’s 700,000 lush and rare plants, get gardening tips, take self-guided walking tours, join a scavenger hunt, enjoy kids’ activities and more. Walk for the Animals
This annual event by San Diego Humane Society & SPCA raises funds to help homeless and abused animals. The event features a pancake breakfast, a scenic two-mile walk, vendors, and doggie activities and contests. Sat., 7 am – 12 pm, NTC Park at Liberty Station, $15 – $40/entrant. All ages. American Indian Heritage Pow Wow
Come to this celebration of American Indian culture where the Native community gather to dance, sing and honor traditions. The event also includes arts and crafts, entertainment and food. Sat. – Sun., 10 am – 6 pm, Balboa Park, Free. All ages. Event details.
The Ocean Beach Kiwanis Kite Festival marks a fun day of festivities including kite making, decorating, flying and judging, am arts and crafts fair, parade, food and live music. Free style kite flying follows later in the day at the beach. Food, music, and kite flying demonstrations throughout the day. Sat., 9 am – 4 pm, Dusty Rhodes Park, Free. All ages. Event details.
Asian Cultural Festival
The Asian Cultural Festival of San Diego celebrates its 5th year as San Diego’s celebration for Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. Festival features martial arts, cultural dances and exhibitions, cooking demos, entertainment, games, and food. Sat., 12 – 8 pm, Convoy St. in Kearny Mesa, Free. All ages. Event details.
KPBS Kids Workshop: The Lorax
Find out how you can take care of our planet and be a sustainability superstar with the Lorax! Sat., 10 am – 12 pm, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, Free with admission. Ages 3 and up. Event details.
Rubio’s Coast Fest 2014
Bring the family and do something fun for the environment with Rubio’s ultimate beach clean-up Event. The day includes beach clean-up activities, free food, drinks, live music, including Clint Perry & The Boo Hoo Crew, an interactive kids zone, and free surf lessons. Mother’s Day Storytime
