It’s officially the start of summer! So what’s your family going to do to celebrate? Luckily Southern California has a lot happening around town that involves outdoors and summer fun. You can bring the family to the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off, enjoy an outdoor movie under the stars at Viejas Outlet Center, or bring the kiddos to one of the Port of San Diego’s Kids Play Days. San Diego

Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off
The 34th Annual Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-off Festival will offer attendees eclectic fun in the sun that’s great for all ages. Join more than 70,000 visitors throughout the day for tasty festival nosh, art, beachfront entertainment, shopping and more. Sat., 10:00 am – 8:00 pm, Ocean Beach. Free. All ages. Event details.

North County

Family Friday at Lux
Take a tour with a kid-friendly, do-it-yourself guide that promises a fun and interactive journey through the studio. Afterward, take the nature trail down to the Lux classroom for a hands-on art project led by a Lux instructor. Fri., 1:00 – 4:00 pm, Lux Art Institute, $5 (members free). Ages 4+. Event details.

Fairy Festival
Kids can become fairies for the day when they create a fairy house, visit the Fairy Queen, leave a message on the Wishing Bush, and sign and dance with Snap Tap N Sing. La Jolla Festival of the Arts
This festival features more than 200 award-winning artists, along with live chalk art creations, art performances, delicious and healthy cuisines, adult beverage libations, and live entertainment throughout the weekend. Viejas Movies in the Park
Bring the family out for a fun outdoor movie adventure. Enjoy a whopping 30′ X 15′ screen, an Extreme Sound System and lounge/open lawn seating. Tonight’s movie features the exciting “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Sun., 8:00 – 10:00 pm, Viejas Outlet Center, Free. All ages. Event details.

Port of San Diego Kids Play Day
The Port of San Diego invites children and their families to join us for an afternoon on the Big Bay for a Kids’ Play Day. These free Play Days will showcase a variety of children’s and family activities and classes “in action.” Activities include circus arts workshops, interactive dance party, kiddie train rides and more! Orange County

A Taste of Greece
This is a fun-filled Festival for the whole family! Pastries, dancing, full-Scale carnival, boutique & delicious Greek food including a wine taverna. There will also be cooking demonstrations, Greek folk dancing lessons, church tours and opportunity drawings. Sat. – Sun., 1:00 – 8:00 pm, St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, Free.
