It’s okay to admit it. You’re feeling a bit of June gloom with school getting out and the thought of the kiddos hanging on your legs day in and out. Luckily SoCal has lots of family-friendly events taking place this weekend that will get you and the rugrats out of the house and will surely beat the June gloom in your house. The San Diego County Fair opens Saturday and kids under 5 are free every day! You can head to one of the many museums around town for art, science or nature fun, and there’s always outdoor activities if you want to enjoy the weather.
Friday Night Liberty
Bring the family out for the first-Friday event, featuring open artist studios, galleries, shopping and entertainment throughout NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District at Liberty Station in Point Loma. Fri., 5:00 – 8:00 pm, NTC Promenade, Free. All ages. Event details.
Saturday Science Club for Girls
Girls in grades 5 – 8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. Today’s topic features the Secrets of Squid. Have you ever seen a cephalopod? Get an inside look at the anatomy that makes these creatures so fascinating. Sat., 12:00 – 2:00 pm, Ruben H. Fleet Science Center, $12 – $14. Grades 5 – 8. Event details.
Touch a Truck
Touch A Truck San Diego is California’s largest car show and family festival, where the young (and the young at heart) can climb in and honk the horns of their favorite vehicles! Everything from military vehicles to monster trucks, Harley’s to HumVees, classic cars to emergency vehicles, and big rigs to construction – we’ll have it all and more. Sat., 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, Qualcomm Stadium, $10 per person (kids 1 and under are free). All ages. Event details.
San Diego County Fair
It’s opening day of the 2013 San Diego County Fair! The event promises a summer of fun and games galore! From card games to board games, video games to game shows, consoles to cell phones – this year’s theme, “Game On!” spotlights the nostalgic, current, and future “games people play!” Sat. through July 4, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, Del Mar Fairgrounds, $8 – $14 (kids under 5 are free). Kids@Lux is a special Saturday morning art tour and workshop that includes a studio tour, scavenger hunt, Q&A with artist-in-residence, and a hands-on art project. Sat., 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, Lux Art Institute, $20 (free fro Lux members). Ages 6 – 12. Event details.
Set out traversing coastal sagebrush with chaparral communities on the hills in the lagoon’s south side. Underfoot are broken bits of shells, reminders of the native people who once lived here. You will see the freshwater marsh below, and if lucky, you might glimpse mule deer that reside in this eastern region of the Reserve. Sat., 9:00 – 11:00 am, San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, Free. Family Art Day
At Free Family Art Day, kids and their parents work closely in the artistic process designing small works of art that reflect concepts and themes from the exhibitions on view. El Cajon Concert Series
Celebrate summer with music during this weekly concert series performed on the Prescott Promenade, which is surrounded by a variety of restaurants.
