Why it’s ‘Yumi’ for Parents Too
Reading ingredient labels while grocery shopping has become a must for most parents. Food allergies, sensitivities, picky eaters, GMOs, organic vs. conventional… you practically need a degree in nutrition to decipher what’s healthy to feed your family these days. Yumi takes the guesswork out of the equation by sourcing organic ingredients from farms and having pediatricians, nutritionists and chefs cook them up in a certified commercial kitchen in Los Angeles for optimal flavor and nutrition.
What’s on the Menu?
In addition to being allergen-free: nut-free (except for coconuts), gluten-free, soy-free and dairy-free, Yumi’s organic, plant-based baby food is also low in sugar. But let’s talk about the good stuff that IS in the food! Ingredients are selected based on their nutrient value and how they can aid in baby’s overall physical and mental development.
Since the Yumi food selection is farm-based and seasonal, offerings change based on when you order. Ingredients such as rose water are also part of the mix. Rose water helps soothe baby’s tummy and contains vitamins A,C,E and B to aid in the development of healthy eyes, joints and immunity. This holistic approach to the food formulations promotes healthy eating that encompasses the mind and body as a whole.
The 4.5 ounce jars are available in two varieties. Basics include puréed ingredients such as white beans, carrots, black beans, broccoli and butternut squash. Blends, offered in over 28 flavors, are where the party’s at with flavorful combinations such as Squash Greens which includes white yam, pineapple, dragon fruit, coconut milk, quinoa, banana, chia seed, date and wheat germ oil and Bell Pepper Soup which boasts sweet potato, red bell pepper, apple, chard and quinoa.

About the Founders
Yumi was founded by two moms on a mission: former private equity executive Angela Sutherland, and former WSJ reporter Evelyn Rusli. Sutherland notes, “During my pregnancy, I did a lot of research on early childhood nutrition and felt like I was faced with two bad options when it came to solid foods for my baby – either feel the pressure to meal plan and cook every meal, or feel like I was compromising at the center of the grocery store… most baby food products are packed with fructose and are generally older than your baby. I felt like parents needed to have a better choice.“
Angela and Evelyn also took into account that the first 1,000 days of a baby’s life are vital in terms of health and nutrition. By creating Yumi, they want to help make it easier for parents to feed the very best foods to their babies to ensure optimal development.
Cost: Meal delivery plans range from $50 (for 6 basics or blends) to $85 (for 14 blends) per week.
