In honor of Independence Day, we’ve taken a page from your kid’s classroom and rounded up the best spots in America for learning about the land of the free and the brave. From remembering the Alamo to California’s gold rush, here are nine places that will help you and your crew make a little history of your own.

Colonial Willamsburg – Williamsburg, Va

Make like Bill and Ted and go back in time to Colonial America! When you become a citizen of the Revolutionary City you’ll meet local tradespeople, shopkeepers, political figures and others that call Williamsburg home. Wander through various shops and city buildings, take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage and experience what life was like for the those revolting against the crown. Kids can learn the social graces of the 18th Century, get their hands dirty in the historic gardens, and even get locked up in the stocks!

Good to know: Hungry citizens can choose between traditional colonial eats or modern day restaurants.
