In honor of Independence Day, we’ve taken a page from your kid’s classroom and rounded up the best spots in America for learning about the land of the free and the brave. From remembering the Alamo to California’s gold rush, here are nine places that will help you and your crew make a little history of your own.

Oakland Cemetery – Atlanta, Ga

A graveyard might seem spooky but in the South, that’s where the real history lies. Oakland Cemetery, founded in 1850, was designed to be a park and with massive oaks, magnolias and walking trails, it’s the perfect place to bring Atlanta’s history to life. The different areas of the cemetery, from the Confederate military section to the African American section, are wonderful ways to experience a hands-on history lesson with your kids. For more information, check out our insider’s guide here.

Good to know: On the way out, be sure to stop by nearby Morelli’s for homemade ice cream.
