It’s time to get your ‘80s on. Perms are making a comeback, and in a totally rad way! Yeah, we get it. Okay, so let’s start with this disclaimer: Today’s perms aren’t the tightly-wound mushroom-like head of pin curls that your mother sported in the 1980s. Matrix SoColor Celebrity Stylist George Papanikolas told InStyle, “The perms trend back in the ‘80s had extra volume, tight waves, curly bangs, and lot’s of hairspray paired with a scrunchy or headband.” This is not what the modern version looks like. Not even a little bit.

So what does a 2018 perm look like? It’s more of a soft, tousled, beachy-sexy look. Think Chrissy Teigen’s waves or Taylor Swift’s cute curls. That effortless, “I just rolled out of bed with these gorgeously soft curls” kind of perm is the new hair “in” for the new year. In other words, it’s natural and doesn’t involve a can of Aqua Net to hold it up.
