When your child graduates from college it’s a momentous occasion. In fact the only thing that might top that proud moment would be if you earned your own degree at the same time — and that’s exactly what one mom did.

Karen Hunter dropped out of college in her senior year, just 13 units shy of completing, when she became a mom over 30 years ago. “I dropped out because I knew I had to take care of my daughter and at the time I couldn’t do a lot of multitasking with working and going to school,” Karen Hunter told ABC News. “I was overwhelmed. I felt like I was a quitter because I had come that far.”

Now 53, and a mom of two, she finally crossed the stage and accepted that diploma within a week of her youngest daughter, Latrice, doing exactly the same. Karen just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Norfolk State University, while Latrice followed less than a week later with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the College of William and Mary.

Both new graduates are excited and proud about their well-earned accomplishments. “She always told me to push through and not to give up on stuff. That’s why I wanted to make sure I returned the favor by motivating her [to finish school,]” Latrice Hunter told ABC News. Not only did Karen Hunter reach her goal, but she raised a strong, intelligent young woman in the process, both major accomplishments to be proud of.
