You’ve heard of a swaddle. And you’ve heard of a bath. But, what about a swaddle bath? Huh? Yep, this is totally a real thing. Okay, so baby is pretty delicate when she’s a newborn. Oh, and she’s also kind of gooey. Seriously. If only newborns came out of the womb like they do in the movies — perfectly clean and about four-months-old. But they don’t. And here’s where the swaddle bath comes in.
So a sponge bath isn’t exactly baby’s favorite pastime. Sure, you need to bathe her that way. After all, her little umbilical stump still has to fall off. And she’s so, so, so delicate.
UCHealth Birth Center at the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado has come up with a solution to those very first baby bathing woes. And it’s the swaddle bath!
When the baby is at least 24 hours old the hospital’s nurses immerse her, while swaddled, in a warm bath. The hospital staff then helps the parents to gently wash the baby, removing parts of the swaddle to get to the skin.
This is a far cry from the traditional baby bath. The swaddle bath is gentle and relaxing for the baby.
