Apples are perhaps the most perfect crunchy, sweet and healthy snack, but apparently not all apples are created equal. Once America’s favorite apple, the Red Delicious has officially been de-throned.
While Red Delicious has been the top apple for at least five decades, there’s now a new favorite apple in town. According to the U.S. Apple Association, Gala apples are the new American favorite. U.S. growers will produce 52.4 million boxes of Gala apples this year, up 5.8 percent over last year.

Red Delicious apples, on the other hand, are down in production by 11 percent, with 51.7 million boxes being produced in 2018. Rounding out the top five apples are Granny Smith in third place, Fuji in fourth and, entering the top five for the first time, the Honeycrisp takes fifth place.
“The rise in production of newer varieties of apples aimed at the fresh consumption domestic market has caused demand for Red Delicious to decline,” Mark Seetin, the association’s regulatory director, said in the statement.
If the same trends continue, the association predicts Honeycrisp will take over the number three spot by 2020.
