While the crafty gene may have skipped you (after all, the last time you pulled out a glue stick was circa 1995), you can still learn a thing or two about creating personalized treasures that your kids will proudly covet thanks to Little Owl’s Little Prints by Christine Schmidt. The new book, suitable for even the most creatively challenged parents, features step by step directions for creating personalized toys, decorations and keepsakes like birth announcements, name banners and a keepsake box.

From Yellow Owl to Little Prints
Christine Schmidt is the brilliant mom behind San Francisco’s Yellow Owl Workshop, a line sold in stores like Crate & Barrel and Urban Outfitters, that boasts whimsical and bold artisan stationery and home accessories. Inspired by Yellow Owl Workshop’s fun designs and hand-printed goods, Christine’s newest book teaches busy parents techniques like stenciling, printing, image transfer and stamping in an easy to digest format that’s anything but intimidating. As a new mom to daughter Emmy James, Christine made sure that the projects in her new book didn’t require special equipment or a slew of expensive materials. She writes in her introduction, “I got rid of projects that didn’t give the most spectacular results in a limited amount of time or required exacting skill (or a full night’s sleep)”.

Inside the Book
Yellow Owl’s Little Prints is broken down into five chapters: Celebrate, Decorate, Play, Wear and Cherish. Each chapter features anywhere from four to seven craft projects related to the chapter’s theme. For example, in “Celebrate” crafts include carve your own stamp elephant and balloon, birthday party suite, birth announcement and perpetual birthday banner. Each craft gives a list of materials you’ll need, how much time to budget for the craft, difficulty level, what you’ll love, what you’ll learn, and clear step by step directions (many cases the copy is accompanied by images). The book is overflowing with graphic templates and other ideas for where else to use the templates or stamps.

What You’ll Love
Before embarking on a project you’ll know exactly what to expect like how much time you need to budget and the difficulty level, which makes these projects fun and not intimidating for the less experienced crowd. While the book is written for parents, there are many opportunities to get your kids involved. In fact, the introduction features a whole section on how to teach art to kids and tips to get your little ones stenciling, stamping and printing.

Yellow Owl’s Little Prints: Stamp, Stencil, and Print Projects to Make for Kids by Christine Schmidt is available at for $17.10.
