2018 is just getting started, but we’ve already spotted bump and baby trends that are sure to make their mark in the year ahead. From eco-friendly, au natural toys and sophisticated nurseries that grow with your child to 2018-worthy baby names, here’s what you’ll be adding to your mama and baby Pinterest boards this year.

Gender-Neutral Nurseries that Transcend from Tiny to Teen

Gone are the days of finding out the sex of your baby and rushing to decorate a baby-blue or perfectly pink nursery. Research from the data brainiacs at Pinterest shows that searches for "gender neutral nursery decor" rose more than 50 percent in 2017, proving that today’s parents are eager to avoid forcing stereotypes on children at any age.

Something else modern mamas and papas are doing more than ever: designing spaces that are style-conscious and sophisticated so the room can easily grow with baby. One sure-fire way to follow this trend is by designing a room that is calm and soothing. Steer clear of lots of bright colors and wild patterns and go with muted, warm tones that create a cozy space. If you’re worried the room won’t feel playful enough, accessorize with fun bedding (like this ice cream-patterned quilt from Clementine Kids), pillows, a rug or other items you can easily swap out over time.

Baby Showers Get a Makeover

Don’t panic, traditional baby showers are not going away. But more and more parents are opting for other types of events to celebrate their child. One popular party alternative is a sip and see, in which parents welcome friends and family to their home after baby's arrival. It’s a helpful way for new (and often exhausted!) parents to limit houseguests to one designated time, and it gives them a great excuse to have a libation of choice with their nearest and dearest!

Another party invite you're likely to get this year might say: Save the shower, we only need a sprinkle! A sprinkle shower is exactly what you’d think, a way to celebrate the new arrival with less hoopla. It's usually reserved for second- or third-time moms who want a simple gathering rather than a full-blown shower.

Major Baby-Name Trends

It’s no surprise baby names are one of the most talked about and followed every year because, as parents, we take our new job pretty seriously and it’s one task we really want to get right. So we checked in with Nameberry to find out how to play the name game in 2018. They predict monikers will be influenced by powerful women, superheroes and, of course, Game of Thrones. What are a few of the names you should expect to hear at the playground over the next few years? Ruth, Kennedy, Arya, Rey and Vaughn.

Au Natural Toys and Clothes

Birkenstocks are optional, but wood toys and eco-friendly wear will be all the rage in 2018. Parents will say goodbye to plastic gadgets that light up and beep; instead, they’ll search for sustainable toys their child can enjoy for years to come. Expect eco-friendly brands like Finn and Emma and Kate Quinn Organics to continue to gain popularity. One huge fan of this trend -- our overworked planet!

The Power of Hygge

Something that has been trending in Denmark for a long time is happiness! The Danish have been voted the world's happiest people for the last four decades. Many say this nation-wide joy can be attributed to hygge (pronounced hooga), which roughly means to have cozy time together and is one of the key pillars of Danish parenting. US parents are finally paying attention, and self-care is set to be a huge trend for 2018. Realizing that being an effective parent means taking care of your own mental, physical and emotional health first is something we can definitely get on board with!
