If you’ve ever dreamed of moving your family into an ocean-front property, why not set your sights even further and settle down right on top of the water. One non-profit organization is set to break ground, or rather water, on the world’s first floating city early next year.
The Seasteading Institute is dedicated to doing the research and groundwork needed to make living on the open ocean a reality. In the future their hope is that entire sustainable communities will exist on the water, but they also understand it’s a massive undertaking that requires small steps. That first step is called the Floating City Project and it’s on track to be completed by 2020.
For the last five years the Seasteading Institute has been working tirelessly researching, designing, testing locations and surveying consumers wants and needs. At the beginning of this year they came to a formal agreement with the government of French Polynesia to develop legislation for a sea zone that would be the location of the world’s first floating city. They hope to start the building by the beginning of 2018.
So how much will a house on the ocean cost you? According to the Seasteading Institute “the first seasteads in protected waters should be affordable to the middle class of developed nations, and we hope that new materials and improvements in manufacturing will help bring costs down further so anybody can move to a seastead eventually.”
