Farber Swim School just won a Totally Awesome Award for Most Awesome Splashing Swimming Class in Portland. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome Splashing Swimming Class” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Farber Swim School: Success rate! They value the personalized lessons and all that can be accomplished. We have see countless swimmers with fears come though our doors and leave as confident and proficient swimmers. Some even joining swim teams and competing in triathlons. How cool is that!?’

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
FSS: No matter if you are with us for 1 month or years, we appreciate having them a part of our program!

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
FSS: My background is in Recreational Administration and Adam’s was in everything pool related. We saw a need in the community for individualized lessons and took a chance! Adam was renting a lane at a local pool with 13 swimmers when we started the business and now we have over 650 swimmers coming through our doors each week.

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
FSS: Coffee! We also have a 2 and 4 year old, so coffee is a must.

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
FSS: A customer gave us a loan to start the business!

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
FSS: I think sometimes people (staff/customers/etc.) assume we have a lot of money because we own the business, but they don’t realize that we are still new (6 years) and everything that is made is put back into the business to grow and prosper.

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
FSS: Hearing customer success stories is a huge motivator! Also, taking the time to go out on the pool deck and watch lessons doesn’t the trick every time.

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
FSS: Problem solving, problem solving and more problem solving.

RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
FSS: Find out what your business does best and concentrate on that!

RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
FSS: Banks always tell us that we need to put more funds into savings, yet we rather concentrate on paying debt off and save at a later time.
