Polaris Dance Theatre just won a Totally Awesome Award for Peak Performing-Arts Classes in Portland. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome Peak Performing-Arts Classes” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Polaris Dance Theater: Our engaging and community-oriented programming. We believe that every BODY can dance and offer all access classes for patrons with altered-abilities, and scholarships for low-income families, in pursuit of this goal.

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
PDT: They might not know that in this year we’re celebrating our 15th anniversary!

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
PDT: Polaris was started by Artistic Director, Robert Guitron and Program Director, Sara Anderson as a creative outlet for professional artists to work together an achieve their artistic goals. Guitron has taught, choreographed, and performed throughout the U.S., Italy, and Japan. Over the past ten years Polaris has produced over 340 new works and brought the joy of dance to nearly 11,000 audience members of all ages and backgrounds.

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
PDT: Our artistic Director LOVES tea, but everyone else is highly devoted to coffee! A mimosa is a sure thing for a Sunday morning- that’s the only day we don’t have classes at Polaris.

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
PDT: When our patrons donate to our cause. We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every donating helps up meet our mission and outreach goals.

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
PDT: We dance!

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
PDT: Super Turbo Speed – the ability to balance a budget, take care of email correspondence, choreograph dance, and sweep the floors, all before an evening of teaching!
