Namaste, Kids: 6 Yoga Classes For Your Little Yogis
Have a little yogi in your life who could use some time finding his or her zen? Consider signing them up for yoga! Kids across the world love practicing yoga and Portland kids are no exception. Check out these places in Portland that offer yoga for children of all ages, including family classes. Now, let’s all say it together – oooohhhhmmmm…
Big Yoga Yoga
For kiddos who are interested in taking yoga, but aren’t ready to jump into a large, overwhelming class, check out the schedule at Big Yoga Yoga (5220 SE 42nd Avenue, Portland). Each class is limited to just four students to create a very controlled yoga experience for your child. Big Yoga Yoga offers classes for toddler through teenagers – visit their website for detailed information on current sessions.
Yoga Shala
Starting as young as 4 years old, Yoga Shala offers classes using the Yoga Calm system. This style of yoga blends poses with social skills games, mindfulness activities, and counseling techniques. Think of it like a well-rounded zen meditation and workout for your kids. Yoga Shala also offers Drop-In Childcare if your little ones aren’t quite ready to hit the mat but you are.
Imagination Yoga
This studio is focused 100% on yoga for children, making it a great choice for Portland kids. Imagination Yoga takes advantage of those creative little minds and puts them to use by using their imagination on their journey to learn yoga – each session has a different theme and classes are offered at various locations around Portland. Classes are currently underway for ages two to twelve – check out their website for details on registration and locations.
Move Yoga
Dedicated to bringing yoga for children into the Portland community, Move Yoga brings the yoga to you. They make it easy to arrange yoga sessions at your school, community center or studio for children, families, or special groups – grab a group of moms for a Tuesday morning class that basement you never use or arrange for them to visit your co-op preschool. Move Yoga is flexible and most of all, fun!
Stumptown Yoga
A family-favorite for Portland yogis, Stumptown Yoga was a finalist in last year’s Red Tricycle Totally Awesome Awards for their Kids & Parents Yoga Class. Offered on Monday and Wednesday mornings, from 10:30 am – 11:30 am, the class is for ages two to six, but they are flexible with older and younger children attending as well. Stumptown is a great choice for families who prefer to do yoga together.
Yoga Playgrounds
With sessions offered at locations all around Portland, Yoga Playgrounds offers age appropriate yoga classes for toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged kids and teens. Parents participate in classes with their mini-yogis until through age five and they have awesome offers for drop-in yoga sessions – perfect for families who can’t commit to an entire session. Call Yoga Playgrounds (541-788-4541) for details on upcoming classes and sessions – there’s sure to be one close to where you live in Portland and keep up to date with their Facebook page, where they often post upcoming classes.
We’d love to hear from some Portland families who enjoy taking yoga together or from parents whose kids enjoy yoga! Tell us about your experiences in the comments below.
