Check your fridge right now. There’s a huge recall of salads and sandwich wraps, and it includes products from several of your favorite retailers. If you shop at Trader Joe’s, Walgreens or Kroger, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recently issued a recall for beef, pork and poultry salads and wraps due to potential Cyclospora contamination.

Recall Description: Fresh Salads & Wrap Sandwiches

The current recall is for salad and wrap items sold at Trader Joe’s, Walgreens and Kroger only. All affected products contain either beef, pork or poultry and were produced between Jul. 15 and 18. The recalled items have a “best by/best if sold by/enjoy by/sell by date” of Jul. 18 through Jul. 23, 2018 and establishment numbers EST. 39985 or P-39985 either next to or inside of the USDA mark of inspection on the packaging.

For a full list of the UPC codes of the affected products across all three stores, visit the USDA’s online list.

Why the Salads & Wraps Were Recalled

The products were recalled due to the possibility of parasitic Cyclospora contamination. According to the USDA’s recall notice, Fresh Express (the lettuce supplier) notified the manufacturer, Caito Foods LLC, of a recall for the chopped romaine used in some of the salads/wraps.

Cyclospora has an incubation period of two to 14 days. Even though no known illnesses have been reported, that could be due to the long incubation period. This parasitic infection can result in serious stomach woes, such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain.

How to Tell If Your Salad or Wrap Was Recalled

If you bought a salad or wrap containing beef, pork or poultry from Trader Joe’s, Walgreens or Kroger, refer to the sell-by dates listed above and the UPC code list from the USDA.

What Parents Can Do

Do not eat the affected salads or wraps. Either throw the products away or return them to the place of purchase. If you have questions or concerns, the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline has recorded messages available 24 hours a day at 1-888-674-6854. Customer service representatives are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
